In This House pages

On a (mainly Australian) swap group, we are doing an 'In This House' chunky book. We needed to make 15 pages each, using a standard template, where the total page height is 8 inches, and the width is 4.5 inches. Each of us had to choose a different theme for our pages, thereby ensuring no duplication within the books.

I chose 'The Welsh House' - Ty Cymreig - for my theme.

The front and backs of my pages were mat or mount board (used in picture framing), and I covered them with pages from an old Welsh language New Testament. I gave them a wash of lightly tinted gesso, to provide a chalky finish and a 'key' for what I planned to add.

For the front of the page, I created a digital collage, and printed it onto transparency, adhered top the page with Glossy Accents, and trimmed with German Scrap. The collage is made from photographs I have taken over the last year or so, and each element represents something form Welsh history, or which is culturally important.

The fossils represent the ancient landscape, where much of Wales was under the sea, while the modern landscape forms the background to the page. The carved standing stone represents the Celts, who were living in Wales 1500-3000 years ago. The Roman soldier represents the invaders who had such an effect on Wales 2000 years or so ago, the medieval character represents the Norman invaders, who arrived a1000 years o sao ago, and changed the culture and society completely. The timber framed roof is an image of a 1404 house in Beaumaris, the iron signpost in the bottom right hand corner reopresent the industrialisation of Wales (the world's first industrial country) in the 19th century, and the carved Ram's head represents the craftsmanship which abounds across Wales, and also the fact that we have so many sheep!!!

For the back of the page, I decided to use image transfers. I wanted the page to look older and more distressed thatn the front. I printed the reverse images out onto good quality photo paper (Epson double sided matte), then coated them with a very thin coat of soft gel, rapidly followed by a second coat, probably before the first coat was dry. Then I laid the immage onto the page, and ran them through my Wizard. It was easy to peel the paper off and leave the image on the page. I started with an image of a map of Wales:

and added two ladies in 17th century Welsh costume:

then a chapel:

and finally I picked a fern frond from my garden, dired it in the microwave, adhered to the page with gel medium, and painted over it with gesso. I hope I don't fall foul of the Australian customs people with that!

Angelic pages 2

These are the other 3 angelic pages I made for the Angelic Tall & Skinny book (which is going to be the fattest skinny book I have ever seen!)

Group 4 pages - I started with some dark pewter flower patterned/textured cardstock, and smooshed a black inkpad over the textured pattern to bring the pattern out. On the other side of the card, I used a magazine page to dab various shades of metallic, transparent and opaque acrylic paints onto the page. The paints were a mixture of Golden fluid acrylics and Jacquard Lumiere paints. Once dry, I stamped over them with some antique text in Galaxy gold Brilliance ink.

The angel on the left is actually Victory, it is a photograph of part of a a Roman bronze relief plaque found at Caerleon Roman Fortess in south Wales. I separated her from her background in Photoshop Elements.

The angel on the right is a scan of a half finished angel as used for one of my previous pages, before I added the upper body. I rather liked it, so I used it as one side of this page.

Group 5 pages - the images are both Tiffany stained glass panels. I love Tiffany glass, the coliurs are so rich and the designs are beautiful. I didn't want my background to detract from the beauty of the glass, so I just crumpled some black tissue paper, smoothed it out, and stuck it to cardstock with gel medium. I smooshed over the top of the creases with Versamark, then used 2 colours of Moonglow embossing powders mixed together - Angel Peacock Wings and Desert Moon Copper Pine. These turned into gorgeous deep green pearlescent highlights on the page.

Finally, my Group 2 pages. The page on the left is another crumpled background - this time it is crumpled copy paper. I coloured it with colourwashes, dried it, crumpled it, and used a Pearlescent Purple Brilliance pad to highlight the raised areas. I took the photograph of the graveyard angels, and turned them purple in Photoshop Elements before printing onto transparency. I used gel medium to adhere the transparency onto some iridescent textured gift wrap, which just adds some glittery sparkle behind some parts of the image.

The page on the right is a digital collage of a child graveyard angel, layered onto a background of a faded wall with ferns growing in it. I stamped the phrase using pigment ink.

Time tip in page

The theme for the CC Swaps monthly tip in page is 'Time'. I am still playing with fantasy film, so thought I'd make my page embellishments shine. I used 2 colours of film, and inked up some time themed rubber stamps with black Stazon ink, laid 2 layers of fantasy film on top, a layer of copy paper on top, then ironed with a dry iron on the cotton setting. This fuses the fantasy film layers together and heat sets the ink into the film. A quick trim around the edges, and you have gorgeous shimmery embellishments. Stamps by Non Sequitur and Invoke Arts.

The backgrounds of the pages were plain cardstock, painted and daubed with Stewart Gill Pearlise paint in Mermaid and Paua Shell. They are all shimmery. I stamped the 'time' background and embossed it with 2 different embossing powders - and interference one (which doesn't show up because the background wasn't dark enough), and a gorgeous pearlescent one from Simply Craft in Cardiff. The owner has had her own range of embossing powders made to her own specification, and they are gorgeous. They are a little more expensive than the ones I usually use, but I think they are worth it. Finally, I stamped the 'time spiral' using turquoise Stazon ink.

Final Diamond tip in page

The background card had small flecks of deep blue and red,
so I changed from black to blue...

The embellishments are stamped white shrink plastic,
tissue and background done as in previous posts.

Another Diamond tip in page

I used the same background stamp as in the last piece,
but on slightly darker cardstock.
I also used the same stamped tissue paper,
but with gold layers instead of silver,
and a Paper Whimsy image instead of shrink plastic.

This one's staying in the UK, I hope Karen likes it.

Diamond tip in page

I'm sticking with the black and white theme
for the moment.

It looks classy and clean - and
my work doesn't often look clean!

This is a tip in page, with the theme of 'diamonds'.

I stamped the background using an Innovative Stamp Creations diamond swirls stamp and Brilliance graphite black. I stamped a strip of white tissue with the same ink and a Stampers Anonymous stamp, then rubbed the whole strip with Brilliance Galaxy Gold ink. I rubbed a piece of textured black cardstock with Brilliance Galaxy Gold, then stamped a Diva Impressions stamp onto white shrink plastic, and shrank it, then layered that onto the black cardstock and some silver cardstock. Some fake jewels and shiny metal stars finished the piece off.

The back of the page is similar to the front, except that the image is full sized and stamped in Brilliance Lightning Black, so it has a gold shimmer.

Tip in page - Men

Sweetpea is running an ongoing
Tip In page swap on CC Swaps.

This month's theme is 'Men'.

The background is a mixture of several fluid acrylic colours
and white gesso, dabbed onto the page
with a scrunched up magazine page.

It is stamped with a BellaRosa 'medieval text' stamp
in Brilliance Galaxy Gold - this is very subtle - and
also with a Stampers Anonymous stamp in Brilliance Coffee Bean.

I took a photo of a costumed interpreter at Caernarfon Castle
last week, and decided he was an interesting man,
so I printed him onto transparency and added him to the page
with a couple of brads.

The quote finishes the page, it reads
"You cannot teach a man anything; you have to help him to find it in himself"

The back of the page uses the same background,
stamped with a Rubbadubbadoo medieval male head stamp
in Brilliance Coffee Bean, wings,
and topped with a print of Michaelangelo's "David".

The quote on this page says
"A man who has no imagination has no wings".

Travel tip in 2 & 3

Sometimes I make life harder for
myself - and I have no idea why!!!
I signed up 3 times for the tip in pages
swap - so why not just make 3 copies of one design?

Too easy....

So here is design number 2....

celebrating the history
and culture
of Wales

the third design also focussed on
Wales - using photographs I took myself,
celebrating the countryside
and some buildings I love:

The final design doesn't work as well as I
hoped - it kind of looks less like a tip in page
and more like a photo album,
but at least the landscape is unfamiliar
to the person who'll be receiving it.

Travel Tip in page

I have signed up for a 'Travel' themed tip in swap.

Once upon a time, a long time ago,
I lived on a ship, and travelled the world....

I remember sending
airmail letters & postcards home,
probably not as often as I should have....

I often used to wonder about the world
below the waves we were sailing over...

...but have never found the courage to travel there.

Paris tip in page

I have decided to join a monthly 'tip in' page swap,
hosted by Sweetpea on CC Swaps yahoo group,
to build up a chunky book with lots of different themes.
January's theme was Paris....

The background is the 'citrasolv & national geographic paper'
I have mentioned elsewhere in this blog,
with layered stamped and printed images on top.

The back of the page uses the same paper,
stamped with fleur des lys
layered with eiffel tower images.
