<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">That's partly because of not having much time to make art in the last 6 months, but also having trouble posting because of arguments with my new computer, running Windows 8, about my having 2 google accounts. It doesn't like my split personality, so I am abandoning this blog and moving <a href="http://adriennewood.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I hope you'll come with me.</span>Adrienne Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00430132196071400748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5006780229385849938.post-75799602315324100422014-01-10T18:33:00.000+00:002014-01-10T18:33:00.020+00:00MIxed media with maps ATCs<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The theme for December's monthly ATC swap was 'Mixed media using maps'.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had a plan. It depended on a stamp. I couldn't find the stamp.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is 'plan B', using maps in a much m ore subtle way, which I rather like!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR7eWZUqDj6C_504woC0GAakMbYmg-WcvuA9Gzdm9X-4rOhwfeQqs-eYzvONTMMenNuoEpeinNgS7T0IAM9I0hgw6eMZkptq2TVeQWq9IGpsEOMYddAra7feGlHQdOy4hkpH-7wlCTt3um/s1600/A9C+mixed+media+with+maps+finished+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR7eWZUqDj6C_504woC0GAakMbYmg-WcvuA9Gzdm9X-4rOhwfeQqs-eYzvONTMMenNuoEpeinNgS7T0IAM9I0hgw6eMZkptq2TVeQWq9IGpsEOMYddAra7feGlHQdOy4hkpH-7wlCTt3um/s320/A9C+mixed+media+with+maps+finished+12-13.JPG" width="229" /></a></div>
<br />
I started with a background made by gluing newsprint to cardstock, then using an old credit card to apply paint in reds, blues and purples. Using the credit card to spread the paint means it goes on very quickly, in a very thin layer, and dries fast. My background was too bright for me to use, so I added a layer of white gesso, again using the credit card. This gave a much more subtle effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijz11gYwxXdILnkT9xHNz9G_ujGdzRLQyCZaZDppghjB8Op2Vr6NA8LTPHhwCm5bsBcWPp2u46NmblBar4NaFlHWPv8Tv9TBxi9W8LCaTDOXiriKzweuR4G_yfEsX7gd8Ek1D7kWwUIS7J/s1600/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijz11gYwxXdILnkT9xHNz9G_ujGdzRLQyCZaZDppghjB8Op2Vr6NA8LTPHhwCm5bsBcWPp2u46NmblBar4NaFlHWPv8Tv9TBxi9W8LCaTDOXiriKzweuR4G_yfEsX7gd8Ek1D7kWwUIS7J/s320/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+12-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The background looked a bit old and dusty, so I thought I'd go with the flow and add some cracked areas. I used a mask to keep the cracks off the area I planned to add my main image to. I used distress ink, which looked lovely, but which didn't dry properly on the gesso, despite using the heat gun, so I sprinkled with clear embossing powder and heated to 'fix' it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyn3X9lQLX31Zl_nFtPQm9Qo0kVbA2rPcJhr2dj9eIeMn7S16BOBGrg1KOr6WrHW6y-YRHNkN9VntYoKLQfvbaImx69s2oYrZ92DDgGrb2HPURMvSEKxzkHcIfCskJkl9IIw1t-Xeg6RCQ/s1600/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+2+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyn3X9lQLX31Zl_nFtPQm9Qo0kVbA2rPcJhr2dj9eIeMn7S16BOBGrg1KOr6WrHW6y-YRHNkN9VntYoKLQfvbaImx69s2oYrZ92DDgGrb2HPURMvSEKxzkHcIfCskJkl9IIw1t-Xeg6RCQ/s320/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+2+12-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next came the main image, which I stamped with versamark, and embossed with 'blue raspberry' two tone embossing powder, for dramatic effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-EZrDeK6Xo2GWT_1OaWqg3A-H57sNUQJ5q70bdsinGfBBckBqJ5qRjl1WRx8RhovNYk79eA24K-3qIJcyE4kZlDC-6lClqzykWVJhLfYLJrHzyC2ff60F5v8dQWZSOGP0xzLQZImAVBGY/s1600/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+3+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-EZrDeK6Xo2GWT_1OaWqg3A-H57sNUQJ5q70bdsinGfBBckBqJ5qRjl1WRx8RhovNYk79eA24K-3qIJcyE4kZlDC-6lClqzykWVJhLfYLJrHzyC2ff60F5v8dQWZSOGP0xzLQZImAVBGY/s320/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+3+12-13.JPG" width="249" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
She didn't have quite enough dramatic effect, so I decided to make her stand out from the background a little more. I drew around her with an inktense pencil in what looked like a dull dark blue. I added water,a and it turned out to be a much brighter blue than I expected! I should have tested on a scrap of paper before I used it on the ATC! Still, it makes her 'pop'. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU1pN_Et30ozMY7GuhvLdFUbDHWXxox8bxce323AMDMuZw52UgQ392IKJ4WPi9B0he_1w-xvTNP7ZV2zuAURbqLwQHClS_a7KqAYMzraNoffMgAy99ajuDiIICo8OgNdLSvMHkTdaKswIB/s1600/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+4+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU1pN_Et30ozMY7GuhvLdFUbDHWXxox8bxce323AMDMuZw52UgQ392IKJ4WPi9B0he_1w-xvTNP7ZV2zuAURbqLwQHClS_a7KqAYMzraNoffMgAy99ajuDiIICo8OgNdLSvMHkTdaKswIB/s320/Mixed+Media+with+maps+background+step+4+12-13.JPG" width="254" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
You may have noticed that there's not much evidence of maps so far. I had decided to use the map for embellishments. I took a vintage map, dampened it with water, and coloured it with faded jeans and picked raspberry distress inks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs_Oj68SjGaeavAB3ydfJyMSu2-_nPRvc2t8hndK_a8pE7lwVPvUSaJ1W2EzjhnmIlR7M4rZycp8LyRBWpdAoCFrPC3YpEeK3A4LUk1HO6AHDTa8gZIIkugfxvertePYnUdtlpaMrzcNPv/s1600/Mixed+Media+with+maps+step+1+12-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="264" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs_Oj68SjGaeavAB3ydfJyMSu2-_nPRvc2t8hndK_a8pE7lwVPvUSaJ1W2EzjhnmIlR7M4rZycp8LyRBWpdAoCFrPC3YpEeK3A4LUk1HO6AHDTa8gZIIkugfxvertePYnUdtlpaMrzcNPv/s320/Mixed+Media+with+maps+step+1+12-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I cut small strips of map to use as 'ribbons' across the bottom f the ATCs, then added a few french knots with hand dyed thread. Next, I used a paper punch to cut out lots of flowers. I assembled these, and used a small white brad to hold them together and attach to the ATC. <br />
<br />

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I made this book for a swap with the theme of 'glitter'. I wanted to use glitter in a subtle way, rather than in an 'in-your-face' way.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I created the book by tearing 5 sheets of watercolour paper for the inside, and a slightly larger sheet for the cover. I painted the cover with a mixture of matte medium, turquoise, jenkins green and titan buff fluid acrylic paints and dabbed a crumpled piece of paper on it to add texture.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once the paint was dry, I used a Basic Grey laser cut 'doily' as a stencil, and dabbed on Stewart Gill Metamica paints in 'brass' and 'verdigris'. Once dry, I added glitter by dabbing on 3 colours of Stickles, and spreading it around with my finger. It doesn't show that well on this photo, but you can see more of it on the second photo.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi11jqo-sKqJePxqqnEQCi9uiVHaA4L5cS0luDRNtGvHDXNYB8pNs9If_obx3bDHdbql3Xh7yxYkrurhJfFKhfoIZfbfgVW8MFq2BtcR3hFoCSJO1OWwuw1t4Jh-zwvS8KTbz97O3fNSopa/s1600/12+POTM+glitter1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi11jqo-sKqJePxqqnEQCi9uiVHaA4L5cS0luDRNtGvHDXNYB8pNs9If_obx3bDHdbql3Xh7yxYkrurhJfFKhfoIZfbfgVW8MFq2BtcR3hFoCSJO1OWwuw1t4Jh-zwvS8KTbz97O3fNSopa/s320/12+POTM+glitter1.JPG" width="246" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">To finish the book off, I did a very simple binding using some tubular variegated embroidery thread, and a polymer clay. The pear was made by rolling Premo Accents clay until thin, creating texture using a rubber stamp, and baking until cured. This is the first time I've used Premo Accents and I was very disappointed because the gold isn't shiny, it's very matte. And I needed shiny. Very shiny. So, after a generous application of Treasure Gold, my pear is beautifully shiny!</span><br />

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I had to make something for a swap, using Lutradur.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I started by taking white lutradur, and adding a very thin layer of gesso through a stencil I then used crimson and orange fluid acrylics to colour the lutradur, the gesso takes the paint differently to the lutradur and creates a nice effect. I painted another piece of lutradur crimson, and mounted the gessoed piece onto it using gold brads.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXPYaGiHezX0MP2xF7aaWbzWd_vD5Roddwb6xxeHyylF2R4qgWmWqNmMYV2tQzYvDlfDKtP7IU6mwOJsX-zF0zEdIgI7xn47gknfDKnKbcc9KXulb5tmiCOdprpcQA2uMTc-XhtU_VDEyl/s1600/POTM+lutradur+8-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXPYaGiHezX0MP2xF7aaWbzWd_vD5Roddwb6xxeHyylF2R4qgWmWqNmMYV2tQzYvDlfDKtP7IU6mwOJsX-zF0zEdIgI7xn47gknfDKnKbcc9KXulb5tmiCOdprpcQA2uMTc-XhtU_VDEyl/s320/POTM+lutradur+8-13.JPG" width="278" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For the focal piece, I took some dark grey lutradur, added gesso, then painted it deep brown using fluid acrylics. I glued on a moulded polymer clay embellishment, and used more gold brads to attach to the layers below. The whole piece needed some sturdy support, and some contrasting colour to make it 'pop', so I cut a piece of mount board and covered it with some bright green polyester 'fabric' from the florists. I adhered the lutradur piece to this base with matter medium, and added a little ribbon hanging loop.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">More maple leaves. This is my page in a collaborative hanging book, where each player was given a colour of the rainbow. We had an extra player, so we needed an extra colour, I added crimson to the rainbow :-)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As I'd drawn a maple leaf shape to use to draw around for my <a href="http://adriennegoodenough.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/textured-acrylic-canvas-panel.html" target="_blank">textured acrylic panel</a>, I thought I'd use it again. I layered up some autumnal colours of organza with snippets of organza between the layers, then used my special Margaret Beal soldering iron to trace around the maple leaves. As I had spare layered organza left, I created more shapes to finish the bottom of the page off.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I painted a piece of canvas with quinacridone crimson fluid acrylic paint, then I sewed the maple leaves on using variegated threads. I finished the piece by adding dots of iridescent gold fluid acrylic, using the end of a a bamboo skewer.</span></div>

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have everybody else's pages now, they were all gorgeous - I really must get around to binding them into the hanging book, and put them all on display.</span></div>

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This was an experiment, following the instructions given by Lisa Kesler, in an article called ' Texture and layers with acrylic paint and stencils', published in Cloth Paper Scissors.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The first step was to cover your substrate (I used a canvas panel) with masking tape. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSbDn7BtRo1wMYTpXIVF3amY1ynccIMA9Xpi5m9uaFOtZxqzT6T4CrYc5Fi4gcNtvk07n6zfY79keTJgBEKnV65kcquW_6X444oRaxLGJ7ee3fJjM4EAGycgxO1dGgtBcNrUQwQ1CCVeut/s1600/Step+1+first.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSbDn7BtRo1wMYTpXIVF3amY1ynccIMA9Xpi5m9uaFOtZxqzT6T4CrYc5Fi4gcNtvk07n6zfY79keTJgBEKnV65kcquW_6X444oRaxLGJ7ee3fJjM4EAGycgxO1dGgtBcNrUQwQ1CCVeut/s320/Step+1+first.JPG" width="316" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next step was to come up with a design which was a combination of a main focal image, and background shapes or images. I drew my background shapes onto the masking tape. As I'd be cutting around the shapes, I didn't choose anything complicated!</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next, I cut around my shapes using a sharp craft knife, then peeled off the masking tape from around them.</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added a layer of moulding paste, and textured it using bottle tops and pieces of netting.</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once dry, I peeled off my masking tape shapes, and painted the whole piece with watered down fluid acrylics in two or three colours, letting the colours pool in places.</span><br />

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once dry, I added a warm ochre colour all over to bring it together.</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Then I added green, using a baby wipe, so it didn't go into my shapes. It's not looking brilliant at this point, but I know my next layers will really help.</span><br />

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The final layer, quite a bright orange, I s added all over, including in my shapes. I'm quite liking it now. The colours in this photo are a bit brighter than real life.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I made a little book out of Lutradur, gesso, woven brass 'fabric', and beads.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I used 2 pieces of Lutradur about 6 inches by 4 for the cover. I coloured them with fluid acrylic paints. Once dry, I used foam stamps and gesso to add images. If you look carefully, you can see gold shiny areas, I gently stroked on some treasure gold for texture and to break up the larger areas of colour a little.</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I cut strips of woven brass 'fabric', punched small holes in them, and sewed them onto the front cover with french knots. I decided that I didn't want a closure to spoil the front cover so added a button to the back cover, and made a beaded loop to close over the button. I also added beads to the pamphlet binding.</span><br />

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This was another project from my few arty days in Shropshire, this class was taught by <a href="http://wendyscraftjournal.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Wendy</a> and <a href="http://anniesatticroom.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Annie</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We made a small blank journal, about 5 inches wide by 6 inches tall.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We used Brusho washes to colour paper (lining wallpaper), then once it was dry, we sprayed Brusho washes with added mica through stencils to decorate the pages.</span></div>

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For the covers, which were inspired by a Linda Monk class Wendy had taken, we used scrim painted with gesso and paint, to create texture. I coloured the scrim with fluid acrylic paint and added glitz with Treasure Gold, before sewing some beads on and adding a butterfly. </span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">One of my regular monthly swap ATCs - April's theme was 'shrink plastic'.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The background was interesting - it's a Gelli print.I brayered Jacquard Lumiere paint onto the Gelli plate, and it behaved in interesting ways - it beaded up. So I took a print using some paper which had I'd already printed with light coloured paint. I love the effect, and added to it by stamping with turquoise Stazon.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added a little washi tape around the bottom of the ATC then set about making my shrink plastic embellishments. I coloured translucent shrink plastic by very lightly touching it with inkpads in pale colours, then stamped it with my favourite butterfly stamp (which is too big for most things). Once shrunk, I edged the butterfly with turquoise Stazon, and added a 'body' using some gold 3d paint.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Finished with a silk flower held on by a brad and mounted on a turquoise background, and it's done!</span></div>

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I quite like making inchies, but never know what to do with them. I have a bag full of paper and textile inchies from swaps and must think up a way of displaying these tiny pieces of art.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So, I set up a swap where the inchies were made and mounted onto a postcard so that they were already displayed. This is my inchie postcard - a mixture of card and metal inchies.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Most of my card inchies have Gelli printed backgounds, and have been rubber stamped then embellished with sequins and brads. The metal inchies were mmade by sticking metal tape onto cardstock, adding texture with an embossing folder, then colouring using Vintaj patina paints, and sanding off unwanted paint.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In April, I went to Shropshire for a few days with a group of friends. We'd each agreed to give a half day class, and here is the textured pot that Liz Welch taught us to make.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We made little faces from cloud clay, each face is about an inch tall. I coloured my clay blue, using mica powders, and added more colour with a little acrylic paint when I'd finished them.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">These were fun to make, each has his own little character! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8az783awyh0EKGQXATP1dxZI5iQ4MfRVqjmKFDoXW7sdJ08YeZcaLjndn6GJl7J_P11HLc0E-PvKJN3zrMnwjW8-Wl0rNKsJaL9gU-AQdmBgDZrpLI5DbCMGAY3arucEitEll1tSAYOXW/s1600/Cloud+clay+faces.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8az783awyh0EKGQXATP1dxZI5iQ4MfRVqjmKFDoXW7sdJ08YeZcaLjndn6GJl7J_P11HLc0E-PvKJN3zrMnwjW8-Wl0rNKsJaL9gU-AQdmBgDZrpLI5DbCMGAY3arucEitEll1tSAYOXW/s1600/Cloud+clay+faces.JPG" height="46" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next, we set about decorating a cardboard pot - this one had contained sanitary products but apparently they are no longer packaged this way, which is a shame as the container was sturdy and a useful size! Liz had kindly paint the pots for us before the class, but this is easy to do, a coat of gesso then acrylic paint in a strong colour or two, then dry brushed with metallic paint.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We took some scrim and dipped it into a mixture of ink and Paverpol fabric stiffener until it was really well coloured and very sticky! Next, we draped and otherwise artfully arranged the scrim onto our pots, sticking it to itself and the pot, and trying to leave some suitable gaps to put faces into. Once the scrim was dry, we rubbed Treasure Gold gilding wax onto the high points. I rather like the look of it just as it is!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The next step was to stick our little faces onto our pots. I thought my faces stood out too much, the colour didn't blend in well enough for me. I added some more Treasure Gold to see if that would help, but it didn't.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So I left the pot to sit for a week or two. Finally, I decided to paint the faces with some fluid acrylic paint - a mixture of turquoise and green, as close to the colour tones of the background as I could manage.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Suddenly my faces look as if they belong on the pot! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added some Treasure Gold to finish them off.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">(a bit too much, it is easy to be heavy handed with this stuff)</span></div>

<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Oh, a whole month and a half has slipped past since my last post. I was away for a couple of weeks and then I've been unwell enough not to feel like posting. So today I will post a few things to make up for it!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm taking part in an monthly 'colourful tags' swap, the colour scheme is set for each month but otherwise the swap is pretty open. For my </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">'green with a touch of blue' tags I layered fluid acrylic paint until it started to look leathery, then collaged on some painted and stamped paper across the centre of the tag. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I used the Gelli plate to print on both sides of the tag, then stamped the top half of one side using Stazon and on of my favourite Stampers Anonymous stamps.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I stamped the bird and egg images (Invoke Arts) onto green paper, and mounted the images in painted slide mounts. The touch of blue was dots of Jacquard Lumiere paint.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5kLkME2LROu9KSxAPIG9NLGyXs93c0G07Aq5v9UqKk7tpemWwTHZe-aofSrGOi9agrLzLWxTCqCmiTZ0fGTgtSyHupD-wU0CCBuE6tM5BmxsiHlU8BA1Met0H9Dsh31iyirExCkALBDzr/s1600/Green+April+2013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5kLkME2LROu9KSxAPIG9NLGyXs93c0G07Aq5v9UqKk7tpemWwTHZe-aofSrGOi9agrLzLWxTCqCmiTZ0fGTgtSyHupD-wU0CCBuE6tM5BmxsiHlU8BA1Met0H9Dsh31iyirExCkALBDzr/s1600/Green+April+2013.JPG" height="317" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For the 'white with a touch of gold' tags, I used moulding paste and a lettering stencil to give texture to the top of one side of the tag,and some stencil waste and moulding paste to add texture to the bottom. I then sewed some scrim around the tag using long straight stitches and french knots, and painted everything with gesso, then white acrylic paint. I stamped a series of circles across the back (Stewart Gill), and added some lace trim stickers. Finally I used a W stencil with gel medium to add the W, and when it was dry I painted it gold. To finish the tag, I gently rubbed all the scrim and embroidery stitches with Treasure Gold.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For a recent swap, I was sent a wooden heart to alter. I painted it black, and stamped some texture pattern in gold Brilliance. I then gave one side a quick coat of PVA glue, and laid some Fantasy Film onto it. I heated it with a heat gun until the colours changed, and holes started to appear.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I did the same thing to the other side, making more holes, and then cut strips of Fantasy Film for the sides.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once the heart was all shiny and bright, I decided it was too bright, and added impasto paste to dull it down. I stamped into the paste, and also applied some through stencil waste. Once dry, I rubbed Treasure Gold all over the impasto. Finally, I put black polymer clay into a face mould, then brushed it with PearlEx powder, and cooked it in my melt pot for about 25 minutes. I stuck it on with heavy gel medium.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Shrink plastic. Amazing stuff. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I decided to make a shrink plastic charm necklace, using clear and translucent shrink plastic. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I drew a heart template shape, then laid it onto the shrink plastic and drew around it to create the hearts. I punched holes in all the hearts, ready for the jump rings.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I coloured the clear hearts with Stazon ink, and heated them. While they were still hot, I stamped into them using a 'crackle' stamp inked up with gold Brilliance ink.</span></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I coloured the backs of the translucent hearts with Stazon, then stamped the fronts with a selection of finely patterned stamps. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

I've used Fantasy Film many times, right? So why did I prevaricate for a month? Who knows, but today the inspiration finally arrived - in the nick of time, it's the deadline for posting.</span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I painted a thin canvas with a mixture of micaceous iron oxide and purple fluid acrylic paint. I coated it with PVA glue, and stuck two pieces of Fantasy Film down. Then I hit it with the heat gun, until it bubbled and changed colours, and started to become holey. It's hard to photograph, but the 3 images below give you some idea.</span><br />

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added some silk tops to bring in some more colour and a shiny texture. These are hand dyed by Oliver Twists. I love their stuff. It's probably a good thing they don't have a website, because I *only* spend about £50 a year on their goodies at shows. If they had a website, I'm sure it would run into hundreds....</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">You might have noticed that the theme of this piece is 'heartfelt' and there's no heart? I have not yet mastered the embellishing machine to a high enough level to create shapes, so I got the hand needle felting equipment out. I laid a thin layer of red rovings vertically, another horizontally, and the top layer was vertical again. I put a heart shaped cutter on top, and needled the layers together. It's quite therapeutic, you can relieve tension by imagining you're stabbing voodoo dolls while you're being creative!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I wasn't intending to finish the heart by hand, just to needle it enough so that I could lift it off the brush in one piece. I used a dull red, a brighter red, and then added some more silk rovings down the centre for a bit of shine and a different texture.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next, I embellished it onto the background, layering some gold 'angelina' I bought about 10 years ago, when I didn't realise you could buy angelina that didn't fuse together. I knew it would come in handy one day! It just adds little subtle glitz.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here's how it was done. The base layer is card stock, sprayed with Adirondack colour mists in lettuce and pesto and a Sticky Fingers mist in grass green. This was over stamped with a couple of texture stamps using brushed sage Distress ink.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The next layer is acetate. I used a bronze Viva Perle pen to draw random lines all over the acetate, and left it to dry overnight. I painted between the lines with glass paint. This didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped, and I wanted more variation in colour, so I added some alcohol inks, which didn't behave at all as I expected. *Note to self - don't use alcohol ink over glass paint*. I painted some areas with an acrylic glaze - on the back of the acetate. I decided it would do, even though it was less of a stained glass effect than I hoped for.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I cut it all up into ATCs and it looked good, but there as nothing in particular to focus on. I tried laying a number of things on top, but nothing grabbed me, so I set to making a bird cage. The shape is trimmed form die cut name place cards found in the wedding aisle of Hobbycraft. I spent a while painting the little birdies, and then realised the bars would have to be in front of them.... I mixed micaceous iron oxide with green acrylic and painted the bars. This didn't show up well, I realised it works better on larger areas. I decided I needed shiny bird cages to go onto the shiny background. 3 layers of embossing powder later, I had nice shiny embellishments, which I added with a brad.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I don't plan my art very often, it usually goes where it wants to, but this one took more diverse paths than usual.</span></div>

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Made some ATCs today, on the theme of 'printed papers' - they had to have a background made of printed paper. I stuck and old book page to my card backs, and sprayed with gunmetal and pearl colour mist sprays from <a href="http://www.outsidethemargins.com/" target="_blank">Outside the Margins</a>. I added Golden black mica flakes around the edges, and used a diamonds stencil to apply Golden micaceous iron oxide down one side. I added some dots to add texture and dimension, using a pearl pen.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqsLitGRubj8efGIaJDf8ClrLIxBYTpKWJhJtxa_l7FF4Yx_vAaYAi-k7NzxFAtaFmMwmlXDSJ3Uxw26aWSNVZGpPMOsmGuEB0FY0oYvAxGAUOxq6_gTyaVC3n72OcHzWpzADbhJPjTA5Z/s1600/Printed+paper+ATC+half+finished+2-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqsLitGRubj8efGIaJDf8ClrLIxBYTpKWJhJtxa_l7FF4Yx_vAaYAi-k7NzxFAtaFmMwmlXDSJ3Uxw26aWSNVZGpPMOsmGuEB0FY0oYvAxGAUOxq6_gTyaVC3n72OcHzWpzADbhJPjTA5Z/s1600/Printed+paper+ATC+half+finished+2-13.JPG" height="320" width="222" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So far, so good. I then made, and tried out, a whole series of embellishments on the ATCs, and none of them worked. I thought an image might work, but I have no long tall stamps, and none of the images in my collection are that shape either.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> So I stamped a swirly pattern down the right hand side to see if that would help. It looked better. I tried a whole bunch of other things before settling on pieces of shrink plastic - fragments of images on one, fragments of text on another, and fragments of numbers on the last one. Works for me....</span><br />

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The theme for my monthly ATC swap was "doors and what's behind them."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here is the front of the ATC I created:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLp9c_oLzLkzb49JZCu-x4gVbu1Sy3CA1oSZEjXfR1gA0L81s6c172c2Xug4h8WmUjV8kV2NgnoUSvGJxkLisXjW8ltQlD0AKAiR1qmsUhurkrpJdTn4as7kBBiAl-Ugck4XSevpI5UlRl/s1600/Door+front+1-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLp9c_oLzLkzb49JZCu-x4gVbu1Sy3CA1oSZEjXfR1gA0L81s6c172c2Xug4h8WmUjV8kV2NgnoUSvGJxkLisXjW8ltQlD0AKAiR1qmsUhurkrpJdTn4as7kBBiAl-Ugck4XSevpI5UlRl/s1600/Door+front+1-13.JPG" height="320" width="230" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The front of the ATC, the door itself, is made from scraps and odds and ends of sticks of friendly plastic. I just cut all my scraps into smallish pieces and laid them all out onto a craft sheet, as close together as I could get them. I took another craft sheet and laid it on top, and ironed them until they melted together into a an A4 sheet approximately half the thickness of a friendly plastic stick . I guess you could use a skillet for this if you have one, but your sheet would be thicker. There were small gaps, so I added some more pieces of friendy plastic and ironed again. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I then used a Spellbinders ATC die and my Wizard to cut ATCs form the sheet of friendly plastic. I rubbed the ATCs all over with olive bronze Treasure Gold, to hide most of the mixture of colours of friendly plastic. Each ATC was then laid onto the craft sheet, heated with a heat gun, and stamped into with the diamond patterned stamp (Invoke Arts). I allowed the friendly plastic to completely cool before removing the stamp, and added more olive bronze Treasure Gold to give good coverage, then used renaissance gold Treasure Gold to highlight some of the raised areas. I punched a hole, then added a bead cap and brad to make the door handle.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here is the what's behind the door:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj49RUL6e9nbCr43-kQINzvJWATB7NAIpjC70l71xC55M_2Yzzqf5vcyLv3QI6OUflW2ICyU9VEE9yvHKmc73sYDyZjupLDiSLqCHwglLJKMkr8FiuQLDaRN1rhPU8FkgborwEw326vkzNe/s1600/Door+inside+finished+1-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj49RUL6e9nbCr43-kQINzvJWATB7NAIpjC70l71xC55M_2Yzzqf5vcyLv3QI6OUflW2ICyU9VEE9yvHKmc73sYDyZjupLDiSLqCHwglLJKMkr8FiuQLDaRN1rhPU8FkgborwEw326vkzNe/s1600/Door+inside+finished+1-13.JPG" height="226" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The door is hinged with organza - the friendly plastic was carefully heated down one side and the organza was pressed into the warm plastic. I then cut pieces of very thin wood sheet (maybe this is marquetry veneer?) to size, inked them to age them, and stamped them using the same stamp as the front of the door, before sticking them to the friendly plastic with red liner tape. The other part of the organza hinge was trapped between two layers of card stuck together with red liner tape.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The backgrounds of the inside were created using the layered paint technique as detailed in a <a href="http://adriennegoodenough.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/about-5-years-ago-i-took-class-with-ann.html" target="_blank">previous blog post.</a></span></div>

</span><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I cut this background into ATC sized pieces, stamped the words onto some paper from a very old book and glued them onto the background with gel medium.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Why 'Pieces of History'? Well, all the elements of the ATC are pieces of my history. The friendly plastic was all left over from other projects. The layered paint technique was learnt at Art & Soul during a fantastic trip to the USA back in 2007, which is part of my history. It was painted onto a base of cardboard bpxes which used to contain one of my favourite smoothie ice lollies, and the book pages used for the words are from an old book which I have had for a long time, again part of my history.</span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I made some tags for a swap. I was really pleased with them, so I thought I'd put a short tutorial here on how they were done.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPa9wN4JGQFXSp29vVmBTksLbn_W_RoNXnxbW_UC7fJQUOKadUphmiCo5eJcKyKUXZTiyty7Scv93q4vMlMbbrcF3JwRBKipVlNBsFC2mVAceT335jVWeOHFLuWcQbkAHLXTCqv_blIsLX/s1600/finished+book+pages+open.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPa9wN4JGQFXSp29vVmBTksLbn_W_RoNXnxbW_UC7fJQUOKadUphmiCo5eJcKyKUXZTiyty7Scv93q4vMlMbbrcF3JwRBKipVlNBsFC2mVAceT335jVWeOHFLuWcQbkAHLXTCqv_blIsLX/s1600/finished+book+pages+open.JPG" height="266" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I used these 3 colours of Distress Ink, plus Walnut Stain.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU299_fEbYHURv0elME19QSdYCNkWZMj_hD_hEWLkyZE9AbWFWwd2eH0TVYhDLe6io6opC6NDkSEXca_ckdYED0aYaZEUyHOm40LnCntL6FHIMWGyFuNtmh3osUTbBrSV2IfO1ZP6KKJX5/s1600/Distress+ink+colours.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU299_fEbYHURv0elME19QSdYCNkWZMj_hD_hEWLkyZE9AbWFWwd2eH0TVYhDLe6io6opC6NDkSEXca_ckdYED0aYaZEUyHOm40LnCntL6FHIMWGyFuNtmh3osUTbBrSV2IfO1ZP6KKJX5/s1600/Distress+ink+colours.JPG" height="101" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Firstly, I used the ink application tool with sponge to apply a layer of the lighter blue, and some of the rusty hinge. I added the darker blue round the edges. I ran two tags through my Wizard in a Cuttlebug folder, then used a stencil on the other two - one has moulding paste applied, the other was inked through the stencil - I used all 3 colours of ink for this.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added more ink to the raised areas of the two embossed tags,mainly rusty hinge but also some of the darker blue, and stamped the stencilled tag to add more 'texture'.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I inked up the tag with moulding paste, again using all three colours of ink.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8CK7_6nsS9tbgI2ts13cJf5PXK_2Op-MDqIpI0ZYaEOYmPPKbgOuOvLlmNyMubz6e-XZ4pc-vkFNmVRGJefycdpA_m8uIHorRRD5SI6ZKkKV2wZYwp4qcLcVuiW04ubvSYhQ_BwEE6uMD/s1600/stage4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8CK7_6nsS9tbgI2ts13cJf5PXK_2Op-MDqIpI0ZYaEOYmPPKbgOuOvLlmNyMubz6e-XZ4pc-vkFNmVRGJefycdpA_m8uIHorRRD5SI6ZKkKV2wZYwp4qcLcVuiW04ubvSYhQ_BwEE6uMD/s1600/stage4.JPG" height="157" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I didn't neglect the backs of the tags, the embossed tags were just inked with the rusty hinge, the other tags were inked with all 3 colours, and stamped with a distressed paisley stamp in the darker blue.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzbsjg22Z2p_bPAkZUu9B2AwWy8WtHDgFtFIQVC2WYn5kFN43VrrBi0qzfcFv81Bpp5C3G-vJwNdDAikH47r8ii0VBI_CfzED4zYfBOpSRw7rf_zoyDS8Tz2dutojchUsVeOpaz2HcTwJq/s1600/backs.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzbsjg22Z2p_bPAkZUu9B2AwWy8WtHDgFtFIQVC2WYn5kFN43VrrBi0qzfcFv81Bpp5C3G-vJwNdDAikH47r8ii0VBI_CfzED4zYfBOpSRw7rf_zoyDS8Tz2dutojchUsVeOpaz2HcTwJq/s1600/backs.JPG" height="170" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Finally, I added depth and texture by applying Walnut Stain ink around the edges, and sprinkling with Detail Clear embossing powder, and heating with my heat gun. I wanted the effect to be subtle, so I rubbed some of the embossing powder off with my finger before heating - this made it thinner in some parts than others, and also blurred the line where the embossing powder finishes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I created some backgrounds using the tag card and inks, and stamped them with the lighter blue ink and the same textured background stamp as the tags, before stamping Leonardo images onto them, and adding more of all 3 inks with the applicator tool. I stamped some words onto offcuts. I layered the images onto very thin layer of wood, which I had coloured using the same ink, then added to the tags with the words. I only have 3 Leonardo stamps with the right size images for the tags, so the last tag has a panel with some stick on letters spelling Da Vinci.</span></div>

<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">About 5 years ago I took a class </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">with <a href="http://www.annbaldwin.com/" target="_blank">Ann Baldwin</a> at Art & Soul, in Portland. Ann has been moving from painting to photography, and her photography is interesting but I prefer her paintings. Perhaps when she's been doing photography for as long as she's been painting, I'll like the photography as much as I like the painting!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ann paints beautiful paintings by layering acrylics - sometimes 45 or more layers. She adds texture by adding papers and other media and textured elements between the layers. I decided on a simple version of what I learnt for Y.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I took some scrap cardboard, and painted in with a thin layer of gesso. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Another layer of Nickel Azo Yellow. I like this - it could get much richer with more layers and the introduction of other colours, but this peice has to be Y for Yellow, so I'd better stop. There are about 10 layers of paint here.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The back, though, well that's another matter. I'd done everything so far (apart from the red spots) to another piece of card to be the back of the piece.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added layers of Nickel Azo Gold, Transparent Burnt Orange, and Transparent Iron Oxide Red. I painted some of the gold hearts with Turquoise, very thinly. I layered in Iridescent bronze at different points so there would be different colours of gold in the piece. It looks like rich leather.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is similar, but more deep colours added - about 17 layers of paint here.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">You can make it brighter, depending on which colours you use. Somewhere in the middle of this, there was a Turquoise layer, which turned the yellowy areas green, and the reddish areas slightly greeny browny.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is a really easy technique which produces really rich surfaces with lots of depth and deep shine. The trick is just to have patience, and take the time to paint many layers but keep the layers really thin, and to make sure each layer is completely dry before adding the next (use a heat gun if you're as impatient as me!).</span></div>

<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">U is for Umber, embossed with 2 different embossing folders (Cuttlebug, Tim Holtz) painted with a couple of coats of Golden fluid acrylic raw umber, and the word 'umber' drawn with a Viva Pearl pen. The little circle is just a couple of layers of card, run through and embossing folder and painted.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">V is for violet was a bit more fun, I used a brocade embossing folder and Golden quinacridone violet. This looks more like fuchsia or cerise to me than Violet, but they are a professional paint company and who am I to argue? The flower is organza, which I cut into circles, then cut towards the centres and held over a candle to make the 'petals', before attaching with a gold brad. The lettering is done with gold Stickles.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The back of V is Viridian. I like Viridian, it is very close to Teal/Turquoise, which is my favourite colour (you may have noticed this!). Same techniques as U & Violet. I was really tempted to add a little Treasure Gold to the high points, but then they wouldn't have been pure colours....</span></div>

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For this swap, I needed to make 3 ATCs which featured metal. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I decided to use metal tape, but to add image and texture by putting peel offs onto the card bases before applying the metal tape. I also used Dyna tape labels for the words.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is the first stage:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The first ATC is coloured with alcohol inks - butterscotch and lettuce with a touch of pesto. I applied them all separately, but they pretty much mingled into one colour. I added some more to mottle them, but it just blended, so I took the hint and left them alone!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The second ATC - 'oak' - was painted with several colours and coats of Pebeo glass paint, sanded with a fine sanding block, then overstamped with a tiny oak leaf in Brilliance Coffeebean ink. I wasn't thrilled with the outcome so put it to one side for a while.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I added some alcohol inks and felt it had improved.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The distressed damsel was also peel offs under metal tape, but this time I added a second layer of metal tape, and trapped a chipboard frame and image between the layers. I then painted the metal tape with Stewart Gill Byzantium paints, then sanded it down, and added a little Treasure Gold here and there, then sanded again to make the high points more prominent.</span></div>

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Each year on the UK Art Swaps group, we run a '12 Days of Christmas' swap, where each player makes 12 small gifts, wraps and sends them to 'Mother Santa', who swaps them out and sends a set of 12 gifts to each player.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some of us start opening one present a day from 12th December onwards, some wait until Xmas Day to open them all, and some probably open them all the moment the package arrives!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The hardest part of the swap is deciding what to make. It needs to be reasonably small, and light, so that the postage doesn't cost too much. The cost of making the gifts is also a factor because when you're making 12 of something the costs can mount up quite quickly.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This year I decided to make some brooches. I used some recycled wool fabric for the base, and needlefelted wool rovings onto both sides, to make a fairly sturdy felted fabric. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I cut leaf shapes from this felt base, and machine sewed velvet leaf shapes onto them. I used variegated Perle thread in my bottom bobbin to sew round the edges of the velvet, and the leaf 'veins'.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I sewed around each brooch a few times using metallic thread, so that each brooch has a subtle hint of glimmer.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">To finish the brooches off, I got out my needles and thread and hand sewed french knots and beads to the fronts, and brooch backs to the backs.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I hope the recipients like them!</span></div>
